Web Session "Whistleblowing – Practical Education for Actuaries" on 8 December 2022 Early Bird until Thursday, 27 October 2022! Due to an illness of the instructor, this course, originally planned for October 24, had to be postponed to December 8. All those who were not able to attend the session in October are invited to join us on December 8. You can still book this session with our early bird discount. The purpose of this online training is to prepare actuaries for situations where they might need to speak up or blow the whistle. A natural part of professional actuarial work is dealing with conflicts and dilemmas. The web session is a mixture of theory, practical examples and lessons from others who have blown the whistle. The web session will include breakout sessions to discuss materials covered and to enable participants to share their own experiences. Our topics will be:
Protecting your career and meeting your professional responsibilities
Web Session "How Can Actuaries Tackle Inflation and its Consequences?" on 8 February 2023 It is not that long ago that even ECB-Directors were clearly stating that the heightened inflation rates were only temporary. Even shortly before Christmas 2021 this statement was firmly positioned. It did not hold for long in 2022. What are the main drivers for the change of opinion? Without being exhaustive the following points can be mentioned:
Central Bank’s quantitative easing actions
Increase of energy prices (esp. oil and gas)
Increase of Wheat prices
Increase of prices of semiconductors
These effects were significantly stressed by:
The war in the Ukraine
The ESG effects (Carbon certificates and pricing increases due to tax effects over CO2 levies).
Inflation comes with many challenges for businesses in general and insurance business in particular. Due to the long term nature of the business inflation can be very toxic. This is especially true for situation of negative real interest rates, which we have seen for some time now. The situation has changed since the Ukraine war. The FED and the ECB have increased interest rates just recently. Real rates are still negative.
The learning objectives of this course are:
Understand the various forms of inflation and its historical impact
Understand the drivers for inflation and the indicators to be monitored
Practise the vulnerability analysis of the business model
